National Honey Bee Day

A scene from Pakistan where honey is now so abundant thanks to a tree planting campaign.

National Honey Bee Day is coming up in the U.S. this Saturday, August 15. As you know we at Blume Honey Water are all about saving and protecting honey bees. We are thrilled to pieces for this energizing, vital focus on the all-important honey bee. National Honey Bee Day (this holiday is formerly known as National Honey Bee Awareness Day) is an awareness day for beekeepers, beekeeping clubs, and honey bee lovers from across the United States to celebrate honey bees.

The day offers an opportunity to recognize the honey bee’s contribution to humans' everyday lives as a means of protecting this critical species. National Honey Bee Day also pays homage to beekeepers whose labors ensure there are well-managed, healthy bees to pollinate food.

According to its organizers, the National Honey Bee Day program started with a simple concept: Bring together beekeepers, bee associations and bee lovers to advance beekeeping.

By working together and harnessing the efforts that so many already accomplish, and by using a united effort one day each year, the rewards and message is magnified many times over. At Blume, we encourage bee associations, individuals and other groups to get involved. Watch for our connections on social media for bee-friendly businesses to love, ways to protect bees and how to vote with your dollar by supporting safe beekeeping.

The event has free programming to enhance bee awareness which is open to everyone. The roots of the awareness started in 2009 by a small group of beekeepers who petitioned for and obtained a formal proclamation by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) honoring honey bees and beekeeping. In 2010, the non-profit, Pennsylvania Apiculture Inc. was organized to better facilitate and promote the observance of National Honey Bee Day. The original date of observation was August 22, 2009 (the fourth Saturday of August), but has since settled permanently on the third Saturday of August.

So this year’s third Saturday in August is this Saturday, August 15. Join us and many other bee-friendly, honey-loving organizations to honor and celebrate our bees for National Honey Bee Day!
